14 Things You Know To Be True If You Went To A Small Town High School In Ohio

Small town life in Ohio is special, and consequently so is small town high school life in Ohio. From the very limited choices in electives to the sibling legacy you could never seem to overcome, there were several aspects of your small town high school experience in Ohio that made those four years undeniably memorable.

1. You knew everyone and could (or almost could) name off your entire class if you had to.

2. Because there was a limited amount of people in the school, you and your friends sort of unintentionally rotated boyfriends/girlfriends throughout the course of the four years.

3. You know what FFA means (and it was a pretty big deal back then.)

4. Extra-circulars such as show choir, band and Power of the Pen became your life.

5. Spanish was literally the only choice there was when it came to picking a foreign language class.

6. Also, Ag 1, 2, 3 and 4 were basically the only electives you had to choose from.

7. New kids from larger towns were the talk of the school for weeks. New kids from another local high school weren’t quite as earth shattering because you were familiar with their reputation via football games and other sport related events.

8. There was a good chance that a cornfield neighbored at least one side of your high school.

9. Your history teacher was also the football coach. (Or something like that, at least.)

10. When you took Driver’s Ed it meant you got to spend time with kids from other high schools. Which was a pretty big deal.

14. There were cliques. Sort of. But since the school was so small and the population was so sparse, it didn’t really take much to break down the barriers. (If you wanted to play a sport or join a club, there was always room.)
