13 Things People In Ohio Did Before The Internet Took Over Our Lives
There can be too much of a good thing.
Before the days of lengthy, opinionated Facebook posts and scrolling through our newsfeed to see what was happening in the world, we took the time to talk on the phone and learned of the news via a set time and manner. Today, our lives have picked up a faster, more noisy pace. To remind you of what life was like before, here are 13 things people in Ohio did before the Internet took over our lives:
Before the days of lengthy, opinionated Facebook posts and scrolling through our newsfeed to see what was happening in the world, we took the time to talk on the phone and learned of the news via a set time and manner. Today, our lives have picked up a faster, more noisy pace. To remind you of what life was like before, here are 13 things people in Ohio did before the Internet took over our lives:
1. We traveled the back/country roads for the sake of a good drive.

2. You rode your bike in your neighborhood until dark.
(Or, you let your kids ride their bikes in your neighborhood until
dark.)

3. You read your local newspaper or watched the evening
newscast for your local news. (Today, we tend to consult Facebook and/or
Twitter.)

4. We (primarily) did all of our Ohio State vs. Michigan
trash talk in person. Today, we post lengthy statuses or insults in 140
characters or less.

5. We owned (and utilized) photo albums.

6. For a family fun night, there were the local roller rinks…

8. …video rental stores…

9. …and even the occasional board game.

10. We did a lot of our holiday shopping in Columbus,
Cincinnati and Cleveland—or at the nearest large shopping mall. (Today,
we order half of our gifts online.)

11. When we went to places like Cedar Point or Kings
Island (or anywhere notable for that matter,) the only people that knew
about it were those we personally told and the people that actually went
with us. Today, we take a selfie and tell the world.

12. Relationships with friends (near and far) were primarily maintained via the phone or in person.
Scott Raymond/Flickr
13. We made a point to experience our state parks,
historic sites and other local attractions. (Let’s get back to this one,
guys.)

Small Town Ohio
14 Things You Know To Be True If You Went To A Small Town High School In Ohio
Small town life in Ohio is special, and consequently so is small town high school life in Ohio. From the very limited choices in electives to the sibling legacy you could never seem to overcome, there were several aspects of your small town high school experience in Ohio that made those four years undeniably memorable.
1. You knew everyone and could (or almost could) name off your entire class if you had to.
Michael Daines/Flickr
2. Because there was a limited amount of people in the
school, you and your friends sort of unintentionally rotated
boyfriends/girlfriends throughout the course of the four years.
Vicki Timman/Flickr
3. You know what FFA means (and it was a pretty big deal back then.)
U.S. Department of Agriculture/Flickr
4. Extra-circulars such as show choir, band and Power of the Pen became your life.
Howard Jefferson/Flickr
5. Spanish was literally the only choice there was when it came to picking a foreign language class.
ktschram/Flickr
6. Also, Ag 1, 2, 3 and 4 were basically the only electives you had to choose from.
Ohio Sea Grant/Flickr
7. New kids from larger towns were the talk of the
school for weeks. New kids from another local high school weren’t quite
as earth shattering because you were familiar with their reputation via
football games and other sport related events.
Howard Jefferson/Flickr
8. There was a good chance that a cornfield neighbored at least one side of your high school.
Jagrap/Flickr
9. Your history teacher was also the football coach. (Or something like that, at least.)
Chris Warren/Flickr
10. When you took Driver’s Ed it meant you got to spend
time with kids from other high schools. Which was a pretty big deal.
James F Clay/Flickr
11. Your rivalry was the high school from the small town closest to your hometown.
Logan Elm High School/Facebook
12. You were on a first name basis with the lunch ladies and genuinely missed them when you graduated.
David Ortmann/Flickr
13. Sibling legacy was a very real thing. Whatever your
older brother or sister was known for, that’s what your teachers
anticipated out of you.
NWABR/Flickr
14. There were cliques. Sort of. But since the school
was so small and the population was so sparse, it didn’t really take
much to break down the barriers. (If you wanted to play a sport or join
a club, there was always room.)

1. You learn how to appreciate the beauty of rural Ohio…
Mark J. Blum/Facebook
2. …and you learn the value in being self sufficient and hard work.
Don O'Brien/Flickr
3. You learn how to enjoy and appreciate the good things (and people) in life.
Brad Holt/Flickr
4. Whenever some sort of crisis or tragedy happened in
your family your neighbors brought you hot meals for weeks. (You can’t
get that living in a big city, guys. You just can’t.)
Janine/Flickr
5. Snow days meant you could go meet the neighborhood kids at the prime sledding spot.
Scott/Flickr
6. Living in a small town made family vacations and trips to the nearest big city that much more special.
Stephen Wolfe/Flickr
7. Unnecessary things such as parking meters simply don’t exist in your hometown.
renee_mcgurk/Flickr
8. You really learned the value of family (any many of
your friends essentially became family)—except when you were split on
Ohio State vs. Michigan. Then it just gets tough.
Evil Erin/Flickr
9. When you took Driver’s Ed you (almost) know everyone
in your class—and if you didn’t know everyone it just meant you got to
spend time with kids from another high school. Which was nice.
James F Clay/Flickr
10. When you took your driver’s license test you essentially knew all the roads and passed with flying colors.
J. Stephen Conn/Flickr
11. You have a hometown restaurant that’s better than any fast food joint or chain restaurant.
Carl's Townhouse/Facebook
12. You ALWAYS have a place to call home—even when
you’ve moved away and only visit for the holidays. It’s still your true
home. And it will always be your true home.
